What to Expect

Finding conversations harder to hear? It may be time to book a hearing test.

A hearing test, also known as an audiogram, measures your ability to hear different sounds and pitches. From this, Peter or Nicole can identify the best treatment for you, so you can join in with life again!

Here's what generally happens during one of our hearing tests:

  • 1. Either Nicole or Peter will conduct a full case history including:
    • your medical history
    • any hearing concerns, pain or symptoms you may have
    • or other factors that could affect your hearing
  • 2. We’ll take a look in your ears with an otoscope to check for any visible issues:
    • Such as earwax blockage or ear infections, which can usually be treated fairly easily.
    • You can even see inside your ear with our video otoscope!
  • 3. For the Pure Tone Audiometry part of the test:
    • We play a series of tones at different frequencies and volumes to you through headphones.
    • We tailor the testing for people with tinnitus and also for children
    • Your task is to indicate when you hear each tone by pressing a button or raising your hand, so we can determine the softest sounds you can hear at various frequencies.
  • 4. Next, the Tympanometry test measures the movement of your eardrum in response to changes in air pressure
    • This helps assess the health of your middle ear and the mobility of the eardrum.
  • 5. Finally, the Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) Test measures the sounds produced by your inner ear in response to a stimulus.
    • It is a great tool for hearing screeners after wax removal.
  • 6. Based on the outcome of the tests the right treatment can be prescribed.
    • It could be hearing aids, tinnitus treatment, ENT referral or nothing at all.
    • All our clinicans can refer straight to ENT in your local area or a private clinic.
    • There is no need to visit your GP.

Why Should You Have a Hearing Test?

  • Regular check-ups can help detect problems early, allowing for timely intervention and management.
  • Hearing tests can identify underlying medical issues, such as ear infections or impacted earwax, that may contribute to hearing problems.
  • If we identify hearing loss, we can help you prevent further damage, such as using hearing protection in noisy environments.
    • - If exposed to loud noises regularly, we advise periodical tests to monitor any changes in your hearing over time.
  • Addressing hearing loss earlier rather than later can significantly improve your overall quality of life enhancing communication, improving your relationships, and importantly, your mental wellbeing.

If hearing loss is confirmed, Nicole or Peter can recommend appropriate solutions, such as listening aids, tailored to your specific needs.
