How do hearing aids work?
Peter Byrom Audiology are registered hearing aid dispensers, providing hearing aid services from fittings, to adjustments and repairs.
The majority of hearing aids work in a similar way, although the outcome will always be different and one size does not fit all. We will find the right solution for your individual needs, so you can enjoy life again!
- Hearing aids work by sound being taken in through a miniature microphone.
- This sound is then converted into an electronic and digital signal.
- The signal is then processed, improved and amended – depending on your hearing loss and hearing requirements.
- A receiver, like a miniature loudspeaker, will then send the processed sound through an ear fitting (hearing aid) – so you can hear it!

Peter Byrom took the traditional route into Audiology through the BTEC Science and professional exams organised by the British Association of Audiology Technicians (BAAT) while training in NHS clinics at Barnsley, Sheffield Children’s and The Royal Hallamshire Hospitals in Sheffield. Having gained a certificate in Audiology at Nottingham University, he then completed a Diploma in Healthcare and Bachelor of Healthcare Science degree (Audiology) at the University of Leeds.
He then moved to Rotherham Foundation NHS Trust where he became the clinical lead for adult audiology services and completed a Master of Science in Advanced Practice, also at the University of Leeds. Where can I have my hearing tested?
The Audiology team can see you at Thornbury Hospital (S10) or at our clinic in Dore (S17) where a range of Audiology assessment may be performed.
Wax removal, Tinnitus appointments Hearing Aid Assessments and Hearing Aid Fittings are available at both sites.
Children (those under 19 years of age) may only be seen at Thornbury Hospital.
Vestibular assessments and Vestibular rehabilitation are only performed at Thornbury Hospital.

He is qualified with a Masters in Science (MSc) Advanced Practice and has over 25 years NHS (latterly as adult clinical lead) and 15 years private sector experience. He is registered with the Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists (RCCP) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). His aim is to provide the best Audiology Service available to you.
