Why Do Your Ears Help With Balance?

Have you ever felt a fleeting dizzy spell? One that appears out of nowhere and lasts a little while, affecting both ears, just your left ear or just your right ear? It is estimated that during a lifespan 4 in 10 people visit their GP due to consistent dizzy spells or dizziness. The sensation you may feel when this happens is the sensation of floating, spinning, feeling faint. Believe it or not but this issue may be happening because of a problem with your inner ear.

Loop shaped canals in your inner ear form part of the vestibular, this part of your ear and hearing process has hairlike sensors and a fine fluid, this is what helps keep your balance. If you have been diagnosed with vertigo this problem also stems from this part of your ears. At the bottom of the canals you have utricle and saccules, these contain sensory hair cells.

These cells are the parts of your inner ear that monitors your head placement and help you keep your balance. Things such as moving forward, backwards, being in a lift and everything else is monitored, helping you keep your balance.

Your Ears truly are incredible.

What Causes Vestibular Problems?

The feeling of dizziness is when a patient feels lightheaded, faint, unsteady and also generally unwell, giving off the feeling of movement, whether it is surrounding objects or yourself who is moving. Hearing loss can also happen, more often than not temporary hearing loss is due to the stress in the ear canal. Disequilibrium is the term we use in the professional industry, this refers to the loss of equilibrium that comes with disorientation.

This feeling is where you can feel like you are spinning, this can sometimes be confused with vertigo which is one of the symptoms of vertigo. Another inner ear medical condition. You can have a range of hearing disorders that are associated with ear balancing, our clinic in Sheffield can help with a range of treatment options which we will discuss below.

Balance is maintained through vision, nerves and the vestibular, these body components all work together to process the information you need to focus and balance, sometimes something as simple as blocked ears can cause balance issues, but more often than not it is something more serious. Our bodies are incredible and can make up for changes in vision or nerve input, however, hearing loss is more difficult to deal with and without the use of a hearing aid, it can be incredibly difficult to resolve.

Hearing Loss & Balance Treatment

Depending on your symptoms, our team may make you an appointment to assess whether or not your problems are stemming from an ear balancing issue or something else. If we can determine it is ear imbalance there is a handful of treatment options we can offer you as a professional audiologist.

Treatment depends on the cause of your balance problems. Your treatment may include:

  • Balance retaining exercises: Audiologists are trained in helping deal with balance problems, through a simple test we can work out a way to customise balance exercises. Therapy and rehabilitation can help with ear imbalance and help improve your overall balance. This will help you prevent any falls or dizzy spells from becoming unmanageable.
  • Positioning Procedures: A therapist might be able to offer a procedure that will help clear the particles that are blocking the inner ear, this will deposit them into another area of your ear and help focus your balance more. This procedure involves manipulating your head into a number of stances to carry out this treatment.
  • Diet Changes: Limiting your salt intake along with items such as caffeine, alcohol and certain personal triggering ingredients will help with imbalance. This will also help if you have postural hypotension. Drinking fluids, wearing compression socks and clean eating can have benefits to help with balance also.
  • Medications. If you are being treated for Vertigo you may have been prescribed medications from your doctor that can help with the dizziness and lightheaded spells.
