Say Goodbye to Ear Blockages with Peter Byrom Audiology
Are you troubled by earwax build-up? Finding it harder to hear? Don't fret, it's a common issue. Normally, earwax naturally clears itself out. But if it's causing discomfort, it's time for some gentle removal.
Typically, earwax should naturally dislodge, often while you're resting at night. But if the blockage persists beyond five days, starts to feel uncomfortable or annoying, or you find your hearing is affected, it could signal a deeper issue like infection.
It’s always better to catch any build-up of wax early with a proper evaluation and treatment, so why not book an appointment with one of our audiologists? Nicole or Peter will be pleased to help. .

What causes wax build-up?
Ear Wax is a completely natural substance and build-up of ear wax is very common, affecting one in 10 children, one in 20 adults, and more than one-third of older people.
- Wax may build up if it has been pushed down the canal by cotton buds, hearing aids, hair clips or other implements.
- Cotton buds can also irritate the ear canal and strip it of its natural oils, which can cause it to feel itchy.
- Sometimes wax may build up if it’s very dry, or if you have a narrow canal or a hairy ear canal.
- If water gets into the eardrum during swimming or showering, the wax can expand, giving a ‘blocked’ feeling in the ear and increasing the perception of tinnitus.
How do I know if I have ear wax build-up?
Even a small lump of natural wax lodged in the ear can cause discomfort and you may feel any or all of the following:
- Pressure in your ear
- Temporary hearing loss
- Dizzy or nauseous
- Pain in one or both ears
- Itchiness in your ear canal
- Tinnitus
If you’re experiencing any of the above symptoms, ear wax removal treatment is quick and painless, so call us to book an appointment and we’ll have you back to ‘normal’ in no time!

How do I remove Ear Wax?
If the wax isn’t causing any problems, then its best left alone. The ear is self-cleaning and the wax should naturally clear, so it’s unnecessary to try and remove the wax yourself. If it is causing discomfort or irritation, then removal may be sensible.
Every ear is different and wax build-up can occur in numerous shapes and forms, which means different techniques need to be used for its safe removal. Some people try safe home remedies, such as olive oil drops, dissolving drops, Hopi candles or other methods, which can be effective in the short term.
As professional audiologists, however, we know ears! And we prefer to use more thorough treatments to get to the crux of the matter, so you leave our clinics more comfortable then when you arrive!
We safely remove your ear wax within minutes, using the following Ear Wax Treatments:
Micro-suction - our preferred method, which is safe, comfortable and pain-free. It involves a binocular microscope which gives a clear and magnified view of the ear canal. A fine, low-pressure suction device then removes ear wax obstructions safely.
Instrumentation – a gentle probe method The probe is completely safe and is effective for harder sections of wax which are not too deep in the ear.
Syringing – can be strangely comforting! Warm water is syringed into the ear in a low and gentle, pulsing motion which does not damage the eardrum.
Endoscopic suction – for difficult to reach areas Your audiologist will manoeuvre the outer ear cartilage to access the wax build-up and view the ear canal with an endoscope whilst the ear wax is being removed.
Ear wax removal treatment is quick and painless, and our team of audiologists would be pleased to help relieve your discomfort.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
1. What is Ear Wax?
Your ear canal produces a waxy oil called cerumen, which is more commonly referred to as earwax.
-
2. Why do we have Ear Wax?
Earwax is necessary to protect the ear from dust, foreign particles and microorganisms, as well as protecting ear canal skin from water irritation. Earwax is also slightly acidic and it does have antibacterial properties. Without earwax, the ear canal can become dry, waterlogged, and prone to infection.
-
3. Does ear wax fall out on its own?
Yes it can and generally does, so we don’t advise you to use your fingers or any objects like cotton buds to remove earwax. This will only push it in and make your situation even worse. Instead, we’ll clear up the matter for you within minutes!

4. What Causes Ear Wax build up?
In normal circumstances excess wax will find its way out of the canal and into the ear opening naturally, then it will be washed away.
When your glands are making more earwax than needed it may go hard and block your ear and, in some cases, some people are just prone to producing more earwax than others.
Excess earwax won’t always lead to a blockage, however the most common cause of earwax blocks tends to be at-home removal! When you clean your ears, you can accidentally push the wax deeper and this will cause a blockage.
You might also be likely to have wax build-up if you frequently use earphones, as they can inadvertently prevent earwax from coming out of the ear canals, causing blockages. -
5. Why do I have a lot of ear wax all of a sudden?
Conditions known as stenosis (which involves the narrowing of the ear canal), overgrowth of hair in the canal, and hypothyroidism can all cause ear wax build-up.
Using cotton buds, wearing hearing aids, and the ageing of the skin and loss of elasticity can also lead to excessive earwax. -
6. Can I unblock earwax myself?
There are some home or over-the-counter remedies but our ears are very sensitive instruments and as ear experts, we recommend that you take great caution and care when trying to treat earwax build-up at home. Using cotton buds and hair pins or other objects can actually push ear wax deeper into the ear, creating a blockage.
When you come to us for Ear Wax Removal at Peter Byrom Audiology, treatment is quick and painless, and we will unblock your ear in a safe and efficient way.

7. What happens if you don't remove ear wax?
This will depend on the severity but in some cases, impaction can cause pain, pressure, itching, odour, ringing of the ears, ear discharge and sometimes hearing loss.
-
8. Can’t I get ear wax removal at my GP?
An increasing number of GP surgeries and NHS clinics have stopped offering ear wax removal treatment and it is due to be phased out as an NHS treatment over the next few years.
We at Peter Byrom Audiology understand how uncomfortable and annoying ear wax build-up can be – and we offer a range of ear wax removal treatments to help you.
