There are a few solutions available when it comes to your ears being blocked by earwax, you can see a Pharmacist who will recommend some remedies, however due to the nature of the human ear being sensitive, we advise that you call on Peter Byrom, he will provide a range of advice and guidance as well as an ear wax removal service should you require it.

Your ears wax should fall out of your ear, this tends to be at night when you’re lying down, in some situations it may be the case that your ear hasn’t cleared after 5 days, in these circumstances we suggest consulting our team or another specialist, especially if you can’t hear anything out of your ear, this may not be a build up of ear wax, it could be an infection.

Ear Wax Removal from Peter Byrom

Something as simple as a small lump of natural wax lodged in the ear can cause people so much suffering. Without warning, you are plunged into silence. The sensation of pressure in your ear is irritating beyond belief.

You may even feel dizzy or nauseous. Something needs to be done to relieve your suffering. And if left unchecked, an ear wax blockage can lead to pain, temporary hearing loss and tinnitus. You are not alone… Excessive or impacted cerumen affects one in 10 children, one in 20 adults, and more than one-third of older people.

But where do you turn? GPs’ surgeries and hearing clinics have waiting lists. And unfortunately, many of them no longer offer a wax removal service. NHS cutbacks have reduced spending on new equipment, staff training and the repair of ageing equipment.

You’ve probably resorted to the safe home remedies; olive oil drops, dissolving drops, or other methods, to no avail. And now you don’t know where to turn.

What is an Ear Wax Build Up?

Your ear canal produces a waxy oil, this is called cerumen and its more commonly referred to as earwax, earwax is necessary as it protects the ear from dust, foreign particles and microorganisms. Ear wax also protects ear canal skin from irritation from water, in normal circumstances excess wax will find its way out of the canal and into the ear opening naturally, then it will be washed away. When your glands are making more earwax than needed it may go hard and block your ear, when you clean your ears you can accidentally push the wax deeper and this will cause a blockage. Wax buildup is a common cause of temporary hearing loss. As professionals, we recommend that you take great caution and care when trying to treat earwax buildup at home, if the problem persists then contact Peter Byrom, treatment for ear wax tends to be quick and painless and your hearing will be fully restored.

In some cases, some people are just prone to producing more earwax, excess earwax won't always lead to a blockage, however the most common cause of earwax blocks tends to be at-home removal. Using cotton buds and hair pins or other objects can actually push ear wax deeper, creating a blockage. This is why we advise you to call on Peter Byroms ear wax removal services, we will unblock your ear in a safe and efficient way. It’s also important to consider that you are most likely to have wax buildup if you frequently use earphones, they can also inadvertently prevent earwax from coming out of the ear canals and causing blockages.

Working closely alongside Peter is audiologist Cheryl Thomson, who has worked at Sheffield’s Royal Hallamshire Hospital for many years and now provides a Thursday morning earwax microsuction clinic at Thornbury Hospital. Every ear is different and wax build-up can occur in numerous shapes and forms, which means different techniques need to be used for its safe removal.

Ear Wax Treatments

Micro-suction – This is our preferred method. It is safe, comfortable and pain-free. It involves the use of a binocular microscope which gives a clear and magnified view of the ear canal. A fine, low-pressure suction device then removes ear wax obstructions safely.

Instrumentation – This gentle method relies on the use of a probe and is effective for harder sections of wax which are not too deep in the ear

Syringing – Warm water is syringed into the ear in a low and gentle, pulsing motion which will not damage the eardrum

Endoscopic suction – This procedure manoeuvres the outer ear cartilage to enable access to wax build-up otherwise difficult to reach. An endoscope is used to view the ear canal while the ear wax is being removed.

What should you do about ear wax?

If the wax isn’t causing any problems, then its best left alone, the ear is self-cleaning and the wax should naturally clear, so it’s unnecessary to try and remove the wax yourself. If you notice wax on the outer ear then this can be wiped over with a clean cloth and that may be all that is needed.

Sometimes the wax may build up, particularly if it’s very dry or if the person has a narrow canal or a hairy ear canal. Wax may also build up if it has been pushed down the canal by cotton buds, hearing aids, hair clips or other implements, cotton buds can also irritate the ear canal and strip it of its natural oils, this can cause it to feel itchy.

If water gets into the eardrum during swimming or showering, then this can cause the wax to expand, giving it a ‘blocked’ feeling in the ear and increasing the perception of tinnitus.

If ear wax build up is causing deafness, problems with hearing aids or is uncomfortable, it may need to be removed, some people who experience tinnitus, may feel that it is worse when their ears are full of wax. Contact us today to book an appointment or arrange a home visit, we will safely remove your ear wax within minutes.
