What is an Audiologist?

An Audiologist will provide a range of tests on both adults and children, it will help to determine the presences, nature and the extent of any hearing loss or balance disorder. The results will then provide the Audiologist with a diagnosis and they will be able to diagnose a range of hearing related conditions. Overall they can qualify and quantify hearing quality in terms of the configuration of the hearing loss.

Patients will then be referred for an evaluation, diagnosis or treatment, if they are then they may receive a test battery, this will include pure tone audiometry and/or immittance testing. When diagnostically indicated, further testing may include stapedial reflex thresholds and decay, speech audiometry and otoacoustic emissions. The extent of hearing loss and psychosocial disposition will also help to determine further habilitation options (for example, being referred for hearing therapy services).
